Dolphin Stars Sparkle at Irish Age Group Youth & Seniors Championships

Sometimes it can be hard to stand out at National level amongst the star studded Dublin and Belfast clubs but not so for the members of the Dolphin Team attending this years Irish Age Group Youth & Open Championships in the National Aquatic Centre, Dublin. With an eventful week at the Venue, which had just successfully hosted the Irish Age Group Division 1 championships which saw Dolphin’s Junior Team bring home a National Silver and National Bronze medal, it was the turn of the Dolphin Elite to take center stage and bring home titles of their own, with one National Gold, 2 National Silver and 3 National Bronze medals returning to Cork.

In the Under 15 Boys Age group, Tim O’Callaghan and Stephen O’Shaughnessy battled it out for places in the Finals of their events. Tim had an outstanding meet, with personal best times in all his events including an excellent first time swim of 19:15.16 in the challenging 1500M Long course Freestyle event which saw him place 6th overall. His personal best of 57.33 in the heats of the 100M Freestyle was enough to see him into the fast paced final where he placed 8th overall.

Unfortunately a disqualification in the 100M Butterfly for supposedly remaining under water past the 15M water at the race start, after putting in an incredible performance which saw him touch home first in a time of 61.0, saw Simon out of medals in that event but he bounced back with an outstanding 200M Butterfly Final which saw him snap up the Silver medal in the event with a 2:18.42 time. He recorded another personal best, this time in the heats of the 200M IM with a time of 2:22.72 taking him into the Final where he placed 6th overall. He also made the final of the 100M Breaststroke taking the 5th overall position.

In the 17 & Over Womens age group was swimmer Stephanie Allen who though swimming outside her best times put in some great performances that saw her rank highly in the Backstroke events. Her time of 2:41.56 saw her take 11th overall in the Open 200M Backstroke and her time of 1:14.69 saw her place 10th overall in the Open 100M Backstroke.

In the 17-18 Mens Age Group, Kieran Donovan and Reggie Murphy turned on the style with Kieran setting the pace with a fast lead off in the Mens 4×100 Freestyle relay with a time of 1:00.68 which was another personal best, having already performed strongly in his individual 100M Freestyle event with a personal best of 1:01.03. He also recorded a new personal best time in the heats of the 50M freestyle, with a 27.88 and placed well in his 100M Freestyle in a time of 1:01.28.

Well done to all the swimmers on their achievements, we hope they enjoy their summer vacation and look forward to seeing them in action in the pool in September when the new Season kicks off.
